Dive into the enchantment of Hanalei with this unforgettable adventure that blends sea and river kayaking, snorkeling, and exploring Kauai’s stunning landscapes. Over four hours, paddle the calm, scenic Hanalei River and venture out into the sparkling waters of Hanalei Bay, all while soaking in the breathtaking beauty of Makana Peak, often called Bali Hai, and the lush, waterfall-streaked ridges of Namolokama, Mamalahoa, and Hihimanu.

Your expert guide will keep you safe and entertained, sharing local lore, legends, and the rich natural history of this iconic area. Along the way, you may encounter green sea turtles gliding gracefully, spinner dolphins dancing through the waves, and a variety of birdlife, from Laysan albatross to the black-capped night heron.

Depending on sea conditions and the group’s energy, paddle toward the tranquil shores of Waioli Stream or explore Kenomene Bay, also known as Hideaways, where you can snorkel vibrant reefs, comb the sandy beaches, or simply bask in the beauty of this secluded paradise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I meet at the staging area if I’m staying on the North Shore?

We can arrange pick-up in Princeville with advance notice. Please note that parking is not permitted at our staging area.

How challenging is this tour?

This is a moderate-level adventure. The Hanalei River is calm and easy to paddle, but the ocean can have waves and currents, making it a bit more adventurous. Guests should be in average physical shape and comfortable in the water.

Is this tour suitable for kids?

Yes, children aged 6 and up can join. However, kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, with no exceptions.

What if I get seasick?

While most of the paddling is calm on the river, venturing into Hanalei Bay can involve mild waves. If you’re prone to seasickness, we recommend taking medication beforehand or using sea bands to reduce discomfort.

Who is this tour good for?

This tour is perfect for adventurous paddlers and active families or couples who want a mix of scenic river paddling, ocean exploration, and snorkeling.

What happens if the weather changes?

Kauai’s weather can shift quickly. If conditions become unsafe, our guides may adjust the route or end the tour early. Depending on progress made, a slight discount may be offered, but safety always comes first.

What precautions should I take against leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis risk is low for kayakers in Hanalei, but it’s wise to avoid swallowing water, cover any open wounds, and shower after the tour. Using antibacterial ointment on minor scrapes is also recommended, especially after heavy rain. Pregnant women should consult their healthcare provider before participating.

Before You Sign Up

Cancellation Policy

We have a strict 24-hour cancellation policy. Parties of 6 or more required 48-hour cancellation. Inside of these windows there are no refunds.

Weather Cancellations

Cancellations made by Kayak Kauai due to inclement weather are 100% refundable.

Tours are Non-Refundable

This kayaking tour is doable by most people in average shape. There is a learning curve to kayaking which is short and grasped by most.

If for any reason the paddle and/or snorkel portion is not accomplished by individuals (even if an individual is holding back a tour and is sent back by our guides), there is no refund.

Safety is First

Kauai weather can be mild or wild, and change quickly. If deteriorating conditions prevent us from safely reaching our destination, depending on progress made, there may be a slight discount.

You Might Not Get to Paddle with Your Partner

Occasionally, in the interest of safety or tour-timing, our guides will assign a stronger paddler to partner with a weaker paddler. We paddle as a team so everyone has a good time.

Leptospirosis in Kauai’s Rivers

Leptospirosis is a harmful bacteria found in tropical ecosystems. While the risk for kayakers in Hanalei is generally low, it is important to be aware that the risk is not zero, especially after heavy rains which can wash the bacteria into rivers and streams.

Pregnant women should be particularly cautious since an infection can have significant implications.

Kayakers can reduce their risk by avoiding swallowing water, covering any open wounds, and showering after exposure. Using anti-bacterial ointment on any minor scrapes or scratches is always a good idea.

Maximum Weight Per Kayak

Our double kayaks can comfortably handle up to 500 pounds. If participants surpass this weight limit, we encourage a motor boat alternative.
